Walmart Tried ChatGPT Checkout, It Converted 3x Worse Than Their Own Website

What Was the Walmart ChatGPT Experiment? 

OpenAI built a feature called Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT. 

The idea was simple: 

  • You are chatting with ChatGPT

  • You buy it right there inside the chat no website visit, no redirects, no new tabs 

Walmart tested this with around 200,000 of their products starting November 2025. 

The Problem, The Numbers Don’t Lie 

When customers bought inside ChatGPT, the website conversion rate was 3 times worse than when they clicked through to Walmart’s own website.

Same product. Same customer. Just a different buying environment and the result was 3x worse inside ChatGPT. 

Walmart’s own leadership called the experience “unsatisfying” and confirmed they are moving away from it entirely. 

 

Why Did It Fail? 

The reason is actually very simple. 

Customers didn’t feel comfortable buying inside a chat window. They were used to Walmart’s own website’s familiar layout, saved addresses, trusted checkout, everything in one cart. 

ChatGPT checkout had none of that comfort. When it came to actually paying, people went back to what they already trusted. 

What Is Walmart Doing Now? 

Walmart didn’t give up on AI they just got smarter about it. 

Instead of letting ChatGPT handle the checkout, Walmart basically said: 

ChatGPT can show our products and talk to customers, but when it’s time to BUY, they come to our system.” 

So their chatbot Sparky now lives inside ChatGPT but the actual purchase happens on Walmart’s own platform. A similar setup is coming to Google Gemini very soon. 

Meanwhile, OpenAI itself is also stepping back from Instant Checkout, shifting focus to product discovery rather than handling transactions directly.
