Ask ChatGPT to recommend a supplier, a skincare brand or an accounting firm in Dubai and it will name four or five. It does this with total confidence, and buyers increasingly take that shortlist at face value.

If you are not on it, there is no position to climb and no page two. You are either named or you are absent.

Most advice on fixing that is guesswork dressed up as a framework. Here is what is actually documented, what we see in testing, and the order to work in.

How Does ChatGPT Decide Which Brands to Recommend?

It draws on two things, and they behave differently.

What the model already knows: ChatGPT forms a view before it searches for anything. OpenAI says so directly: one input to its product results is the response the model generates before it considers any new search results. If your brand barely appears across the wider web, the model has very little to work from.

What it retrieves live: When a question needs current information, ChatGPT searches, reads pages and cites them. This is the part you can influence fastest, because it depends on whether your pages are reachable and whether they answer the question.

For product queries there is a third input: structured product data covering price, availability and description, supplied by merchants and third-party providers.

The practical consequence is that recommendation is not one lever. It is access, clarity, content, reputation and data, in roughly that order, which is why an AI audit measures mentions rather than positions. Google’s own AI features follow different rules, covered in how to optimise for AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Can You Pay to Be Recommended by ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI states that product results are selected independently, are not ads, and are not influenced by its partnerships. Ads exist in ChatGPT as a separate, labelled system.

Anyone selling guaranteed placement inside ChatGPT answers is selling something that cannot be delivered. What can be delivered is eligibility: a brand that is easy to find, easy to understand and well supported by sources the model has reason to trust.

Step 1: Make Sure ChatGPT Can Read Your Site

OpenAI runs three separate agents and they do different jobs. Mixing them up is the most common error we see.

OAI-SearchBot: The one that matters for visibility. It powers ChatGPT’s search features, and OpenAI’s documentation is explicit that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

GPTBot: Collects content for model training. Blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search, and allowing it does not put you there.

ChatGPT-User: Fetches a page when a user’s request needs it in the moment.

Each is controlled separately in robots.txt. Check all three, then check your CDN and firewall, because a security rule that challenges bots blocks them just as effectively as a disallow line. Crawl access is the first thing technical SEO resolves, and nothing after it matters until it is done.

One more check: load a product page with JavaScript switched off. If the price, the specification or the main copy disappears, do not assume an AI crawler can see it.

Step 2: Be Unambiguous About What You Are

A model can only recommend you for a category if it can tell you belong to it. That sounds trivial and fails constantly.

State plainly, in text, on your homepage and About page: what you sell, who it is for, where you operate and what sets you apart. “Premium solutions for modern businesses” tells a machine nothing. “Commercial kitchen equipment, supplied and installed across the UAE” tells it everything.

Then make it consistent. Same name, same description and same category on your site, your Google Business Profile, your marketplace storefronts and your social profiles. Add Organization and Product schema so the facts are stated rather than inferred, which is the job structured data does best.

Step 3: Write Pages That Can Be Quoted

ChatGPT lifts specific, self-contained statements. A page that opens with three paragraphs of scene-setting gives it nothing to lift.

Direct answers under clear headings: The question as the heading, the answer in the first two sentences.

Facts in text, not in images or PDFs: Prices, sizes, materials, delivery times, certifications.

Honest positioning: Who the product suits and who it does not. People ask “best for” questions, and a page that states its fit explicitly is easy to match to them.

Comparison content: Buyers ask ChatGPT to compare options. If the only comparison in existence was written by your competitor, that is the one available to be used.

This is content built to be extracted rather than only ranked, and it overlaps almost entirely with good on-page work.

Step 4: Get Mentioned Where ChatGPT Looks

This is the largest lever and the slowest.

A brand that only describes itself on its own website is making a claim. A brand described the same way by reviewers, directories, trade publications and customers is something a model can rely on. OpenAI notes that the review summaries ChatGPT shows are built from reviews on public websites, not from what you say about yourself.

So the work is off-site: genuine reviews on platforms your buyers use, inclusion in credible roundups for your category, trade and regional press, industry directories, and real discussion in the communities where your buyers ask questions.

Relevance matters more than volume here, exactly as it does with links. Ten mentions in sources about your category outweigh a hundred in places nobody in your market reads.

Step 5: Give It Accurate Product Data

For online stores, product queries bring a separate system into play.

If you are on Shopify, OpenAI states that product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no additional work required from individual merchants. On other platforms, OpenAI accepts direct product feeds by application.

When several merchants sell the same product, OpenAI says they are ranked on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether you are the maker or primary seller. Most of that is a data-accuracy problem before it is a marketing problem. A feed showing stale stock or the wrong price loses on inputs you control.

Shopping features roll out unevenly by country, so check what is live for UAE users before building a plan around any single one. The underlying work, product pages with complete, accurate, structured information, pays off regardless.

How to Check Whether ChatGPT Recommends Your Brand

Write down 15 to 20 questions your buyers would actually ask. Not your keywords, their questions. “Best [category] in Dubai for [use case].” “[Your brand] vs [competitor].” “Is [your brand] any good?”

Run each one several times, because answers vary between runs and a single test tells you very little. Record who gets named, how you are described and which sources are cited. Those cited sources are your target list for Step 4.

Then read the results alongside two other signals: referral visits from chatgpt.com in your analytics, and branded search volume, which tends to rise when people hear your name in an answer and look you up directly. No single number captures this, which is why we measure SEO and AI visibility as one system rather than two reports.

How Long Does It Take to Show Up in ChatGPT?

It depends which of the two sources you are fixing.

Days to weeks: Access fixes and page rewrites. Once ChatGPT’s search can reach and read a page, it can cite it.

Months: Third-party mentions and reviews. These run on other people’s publishing schedules, not yours.

Outside your control: What the underlying model learned in training. That only changes when a new model is trained, which is why a consistent presence across the web now is what shapes answers later.

It is the same shape as any organic channel: a readable trajectory first, the outcome later.

The Mistakes That Waste the Most Time

Blocking the wrong crawler: Allowing GPTBot while blocking OAI-SearchBot, or blocking everything with a blanket rule nobody remembers adding.

Treating llms.txt as the strategy: It is cheap to add and unproven as a lever. Fine as an extra, useless as a plan.

Telling ChatGPT about your brand in a chat: What you type into a conversation does not change what other users are told.

Buying reviews or roundup placements: Mentions in sources nobody trusts carry no weight, and manufactured reviews are a liability.

Testing once and declaring victory: One good answer is an anecdote.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?

Make sure OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, state clearly what you sell and where, write pages with direct quotable answers, and earn mentions and reviews on third-party sites in your category. Online stores should also make sure their product data reaches ChatGPT accurately.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI states that product results are selected independently and are not ads. Advertising in ChatGPT is a separate, labelled system and does not buy a place in the recommendations themselves.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT?

Not from ChatGPT search. GPTBot is the training crawler. Visibility in ChatGPT’s search answers is controlled by OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI says sites that opt out of that one will not be shown in search answers.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors and not me?

Usually one of three reasons: its crawler cannot reach your site, your pages do not state clearly what you are and who you serve, or competitors are mentioned and reviewed on third-party sites where you are not. Testing shows which, because the answers cite their sources.

Does ranking on Google help me get recommended by ChatGPT?

Indirectly. The foundations overlap: crawlable pages, clear structure, useful content and a credible reputation help both. A strong Google ranking does not guarantee a ChatGPT mention, and brands with modest rankings do get named when their third-party presence is strong.

How do I track whether ChatGPT mentions my brand?

Run a fixed set of buyer questions on a regular schedule, several times each, and record which brands are named and which sources are cited. Read that alongside referral traffic from chatgpt.com and your branded search volume.
